About the Brand
About
Butterface is a modern clean-beauty brand on a mission to challenge the toxic norms of the beauty industry. Founded by Emily Bell, the brand was built on the belief that skincare should be clean and effective - without fillers, toxins, or misleading claims. Butterface champions a minimalist approach, prioritizing real ingredients that deliver results without compromising your health.
At its core, Butterface represents the rejection of toxic beauty culture - both in its ingredients and its expectations. The brand pairs clean formulations with plastic-free packaging and a playful, irreverent tone that rejects industry shortcuts and unrealistic standards. Butterface encourages consumers to rethink what they put on their bodies and expect more from the brands they support - because skincare should feel good, work well, and align with a healthier future for both people and the planet.
Founding Story
Butterface began with a simple moment of curiosity. After years of using the same classic peppermint lip balm she’d loved since childhood, founder Emily Bell finally turned the tube around and read the label. What she found was surprising - common seed oils, vague ingredient sourcing, and little transparency about what was actually going on her lips every day.
That realization sparked a deeper question: why should something as basic as lip balm be filled with questionable ingredients and industry shortcuts? Frustrated by the disconnect between “natural” marketing and what was actually inside many products, Emily began experimenting with simpler, more traditional ingredients and packaging choices. What started as a personal search for a better balm quickly grew into Butterface - a brand created to challenge toxic beauty norms and bring skincare back to its roots: clean ingredients, honest products, and a little bit of rebellion.

Emily Bell is the founder of Butterface, an analog skincare brand bringing beauty back to basics with old-school ingredients and plastic-free packaging. A longtime marketer and former founder of STRAPT Aprons, Emily created Butterface after becoming increasingly frustrated with overly complicated products, questionable ingredients, and the amount of plastic built into the beauty industry. What started with a tallow-based lip balm has grown into a brand rooted in a simple idea: the products we use every day can be better for our bodies, better for the planet, and still have a little personality.
